Assigned once, then it’s yours

The work you actually do decides your first room, not a box you tick. A coach lands with coaches. Someone running an internal mentoring program lands with the people who run internal mentoring programs. That room is small on purpose. The problems in it are your problems, and nobody has to explain the basics.

The open rooms are the other axis. Pricing, getting found, leads, program structure, and what AI has actually done to this work. A freelancer and an L&D lead can sit in the same pricing room and both be right. The subject is the same even when the practice isn’t. You join those yourself, and you leave them yourself.

No AI writes a post here on anyone’s behalf. Ever. In every room, the person whose name sits above a post wrote every word of it. The same rule governs everything on the Desk. A share carries the author’s name with it. Report and block work from day one, and a person reads what gets flagged.

The Quiet Room

Every profession has questions its people can’t ask out loud. What you actually charge. The client relationship that has gone wrong. The month you couldn’t pay yourself. Whether you are any good at this. On every other network you keep those questions to yourself, because your name, and your clients, are watching.

In the Quiet Room any member can post without a name on it. The room sees the question and never the asker. Answers come back privately, only the asker reads them, nothing ever appears on a profile, and we hold it unlinked at our end too.

An anonymous question doesn’t stay in one room either. It reaches members across every Roundtable room and the Roster. The person who has sat exactly where you are might not share your job title. The freelancer frightened of chasing an invoice reaches the studio owner who did chase one. You never learn who answered from where. You just get the answers.

It isn’t only about work. If what’s actually going on is heavier than a business problem, the room says so plainly and points you at people rather than at posts. Moderators take private messages, and there is a member line answered by a person.

This is not the same agent that works on your business. The other assistant drafts the client emails and invoices that go out with your name on them once you approve. I never write in your voice, and nothing I do leaves this room. I only help you find what the room already worked out and who in it can help.

Just posted this in the main room but I’ll say it here too. My biggest client used to pay quickly. Now they pay later and later, and they still haven’t paid the last invoice. They’re most of my income. I’m scared that if I chase it properly they’ll just quietly stop sending work.
The part about them going quiet is what people in here talk about more than the money itself. Three threads sit close to what you’ve described. There’s “Client stretched from 30 to 75 days, do I stop work” from March, and “Late payment when it’s your anchor client” from last autumn. There’s also a shorter one in the invoicing channel about moving to part payment upfront. The autumn one is the nearest match, same income concentration, same fear.
I think I read the autumn one. It got long and turned into an argument about contracts.
It did. Past the contract argument, what it actually landed on was two things. And the people who got paid soonest went to a named person in the client’s finance or ops team. They didn’t go back through their usual contact. The contract disagreement was about penalty clauses and it never resolved, so you can skip that stretch.
Okay. That’s more useful than I expected.
Three people in here have lived a version of this. Priya Raman had one client covering most of her income who slipped to 60 days. She stopped starting new work for them until the oldest invoice cleared, and she says the relationship held. Tom Iversen went the other way and moved that client onto retainer billed in advance, which took him months of conversations. Dee Okafor is the one I’d point at for the fear specifically. She sat on an unpaid invoice for a long time before saying anything and has written about why. All three are still active here.
Dee’s the one I’d want to talk to, honestly. I also don’t know what I’d even say to the client.
I won’t write that for you, and I’d be poor at it anyway, since I don’t know how the two of you talk. What I can ask is this. Do you want the money for this one invoice? Or do you want the way they pay you to change from here on? The room answers those two very differently, and Dee and Tom went down different roads because of it. Say which and I’ll flag Dee and pull the threads up in whatever order you want them.

Anonymous because I can’t say this anywhere else. I haven’t taken any money out of the business since April. My wife thinks we’re fine. I don’t know how to tell her and I’ve stopped sleeping properly.
That’s four months of holding it on your own. I’m not going to try to fix the business side of it here. And I’d be the wrong thing to lean on for the part about your wife or the sleeping. Can I ask what would actually help in the next hour? Some people want to be pointed at other people. Some just want to have said it once and nothing else.
I don’t know. Not advice. I think I didn’t want to be the only one.
You’re not. Others have posted this here anonymously before, and the replies are still up. One post is from February, from someone who went five months without paying themselves. In the end, they told their partner. The other is older. Most of its replies are members saying they’d been in the same place and hadn’t told anyone either. I can bring either one up. Neither is advice. They’re just people.

I’ll put it here. One more thing and then I’ll stop. The money part is something the room can genuinely help with. The not sleeping, and four months of not saying anything to the person you live with, is not something to carry alone. And I’m not the right thing to carry it with. Two moderators here take private messages, and the member support line in the sidebar is answered by a person. If any of this has got heavier than money, please use one of those rather than the room.
